Last night was a decisive result in Chester yet not in the rest of the country. We would like to thank all of our activitsts and campaigners for their hard work, and everyone who voted for us for their trust in us.
We would also like to congratulate Chris Matheson on his re-election and thank him and Will Gallagher for their part in making the election in Chester a good campaign and a success for democracy.
Nationally we have been left with no party with a majority in Parliament at a time when our Country is about the enter the most important negotiations since the end of the second world war.
Commenting on the Prime Minister's statement on forming a government relying on the support of the DUP, Liberal Democrat leader Tim Farron said:
"It is clear that the Prime Minister has done a deal with the DUP. She must now make clear what the terms of that deal are. The British people have a right to know. The sort of government she forms will have profound implications for the Brexit negotiations and the future of the country, especially if it means she is taking sides in the peace process in Northern Ireland.
Theresa May has taken the British people for granted long enough. She made the election about her own leadership and she lost. Theresa May shouldn't be stitching up a new deal in secret, she should be resigning."
In the next five years, Britain needs Liberal voices standing up for our place in Europe, for our civil liberties, for human rights and for an open, tolerant and united Britain. The Liberal Democrats are committed to doing this and if you agree join us and be part of what comes next.
